Activities

2006: Activities2006

2007:

  • I have a medium power FM transmitter. If we were doing the wired headphone music this year we could possibly augment this with wireless for people with headphone FM radios. (Iain)
    • Maybe we could make a camp radio station? (alex) (Loz is interested in helping with radio)
  • I'm probably going to bring a weather balloon if I can work out how to get it to float (alex)
  • swimming in the river... this may be dangerous, its quite a short, tidal, river and fairly silty
  • I've been talking with Isabel about building a big geodesic dome tent for communal use. Would need some help putting it up and taking it down. (Alex Z) (Loz is up for helping and Iain)
  • Last night - a firework show? Everyone bring a firework and I'll see if I can get some electric matches and a cake or three... [BryanC] - Careful, being next to a fairly active airport might make this difficult.
  • I will bring my giant bubble maker. There is some kind of trick to making bubble liquid, a sugar content, that I'm hoping one of you clever people will be able to help with? (Izzy)
    • Use ½ cup dish detergent, 5 cups Water -distilled is best- and 2 tablespoons glycerine -you can get from a chemist- (Kat)
  • Building the Giant wooden Dork.
    • Will need a wood supply this time I suppose.
      • As last time ;), we will have a supply of wood, but I don't know if it will be the right kind? maybe need to be chopped up a bit.
      • Right, and some nails and screws, possibly - is there a hardware store nearby?
  • Paul and Lena will be bringing a bunch of dorky card games & a copy of Hoyle's "rules of the game" which has instructions for loads of more games played with a conventional deck. Others include:
    • 2 sets of Lunch Money
    • Aquarius
    • Set
    • Gloom
    • card version of Mahjong
    • Dave G: low-stakes (tournament-style) Texas Hold 'Em! (if anyone wants to bring poker chips..?)
  • I've got a set of Looney games including Aquarius, Fluxx, Chrononauts and whole sets of Icehouse pyramids. See the Looney's website and the Icehouse fan WIKI for various game rules using the pyramids.(Robert A)
  • laptop drumming
    • download pure data afore you come to the camp if you fancy joining in
  • I will be bringing enough parts to in theory make 6 trimets as described in Make magazine Vol 6 if anyone cares to join me.(Nathan L)
  • I will bring material to PLAY THE LOVE GAME and to create YOUR LOVER ID...towards identifying WHAT MAKES A GEEK TICK? It will involve active and passive participation, sensory experiences to taste and smell...and more...voyeurs welcome!!!! PLAY THE LOVE GAME is an interactive reality TV show. Audience needed as well as volunteers...Prizes to be won...like Have fun and feel loved all around!!!! In the meantime go to http://www.mamasonga.com and input your metaphors of love (Kat)

Workshops

2006: Workshops2006

2007:

  • "Microcontrollers for Absolute Beginners" I'll use the Picaxe range of microcontrollers to introduce the use of microcontrollers. The workshop will include soldering some components to a board and then programming the microcontroller using a cut-down version of Basic. The workshop will be aimed at absolute beginners - no experience with electronics, soldering or programming required. If you've had some experience of microcontrollers, it will probably be too low a level for you. If enough people take part, I'd like to use the circuits in a big collaborative art installation at the end of the camp. Please email me if interested so that I can get some idea of numbers (Alex Z.)
  • Hand-made felt making, with the potential of doing a large project that would require dragging around and rolled for some time. If any one has a horse we can do it in true mongolian style. I have only one set of carders, so comb making would also be required. I am trying to source some sheep[fleece] for authenticity, otherwise I have [grey only] pre washed wool.
    • Just confirmed a quantity of fleece courtesy of hackney city farm
  • If there's enough women to make up a 50-50 set, I could give a dancing lesson - ballroom's a bit tough on rough ground, but jive, salsa or tango is easy enough. [BryanC]
  • A super basic How to Taxidermy a Mole. I need to charge £5 for the moles, and you'll need a scalpel. Not for the squeamish. And I'll need numbers in advance, please put names down here. (Julie)
    • I would be quite interested in this, but just how much gore are we talking about? (Iain)
      • GOOD NEWS, I have moles a-coming. It is a bit gorey, but no worse than preparing a chicken or rabbit. And it's quite amazing to work with these beautiful creatures (OK - try anything once! - Iain). It will take about 2 hours with break in the middle for preservative to work:
  1. skin the mole. involves careful scalpel work to remove insides of mole without tearing skin or letting blood
  2. preserve the skin. put skin in chemical
  3. create the dolly. involves making a dolly shaped like a mole using cotton and wood wool
  4. place skin on dolly. put preserved skin over dolly and stitch up.
  5. mount. place mole in position on board with pins.
    • If no-one is up for the skinning process I'll just bring moles ready for stuffing with electronics. (Julie)
    • Update: No skinning just stuffing. So far I have Iain, Patricia, Sarah on the list - any more? Yes please (I'm OK with the gore) - Liz P. Also Sarah A.
  • I'd like to run a participatory live-coding-without-computers workshop, where we modify rules while following them (alex m)
    • Is this square dancing? :-D (julie)
  • Is anybody interested in a jam-making workshop? You'll be guaranteed to get severely burnt!! (Izzy)
  • Greenman will bring along the Space Hijackers fencing kit to teach you how to fight like a pirate.
  • Greenman will also join in the fire show and teach people how to breathe fire.
    • YIPPEE!!
  • I'm Aneeta. I taught a knitting workshop last year (Greenman assures me that knitting is the original computer programming) and will be doing it again this year. For more info: www.knittingSOS.co.uk See you then. ax
  • Julie and I will both bring along our hydrophones etc. - for some late night hydrophony, in stereo (Sarah). In the water. We'll need speakers Sarah? (Julie)
  • I'll bring my giant (i.e. 8 metre-long) sonified see-saw, if I can arrange a transit van - people can play around with the see-saw and with the sounds and sonification patch. It's never been seen in public before - oooh.'ll also teach anyone interested how to play the theremin and saw. I'll bring along a couple of theremins - if you want to learn to play the saw, bring along a saw and a 'cello or bass bow. I'd also be interested in experimenting with new theremin aerial shapes if that's of interest to anyone. I'd like to try embedding mini theremins in toys. But I realise that's probably more theremin than anyone can take for one weekend. (Sarah)
    • Mileage in embedding mini-theremins in moles? (Julie)
    • Loz would love to learn to play theremin (Loz)
    • I am certainly up for trying theremin playing (Iain)
  • I can do something on making bags n stuff using fused plastic from old carriers n bin bags. Let me know if interested so I can organise supplies: InterestedCampers (kat)
    • fused plastic can be used to make icehouse pieces - see below (kat)
  • I could in fact do a workshop on Icehouse games .. as in early days you can make your own pyramids out of .. anything.. specifications and ideas including folded paper or 2-d representations . (Robert A)
  • Human Patching Live Coding with Evan ]
    • yes nice idea - maybe if we had some small whiteboards or pieces of slate to wear around the neck we could modify the instructions? or maybe just card is fine
    • update: we have bungee cords to use as real patch cords. fun even if you don't know what a patch cord is.
  • Dave G: Introduction to Chiptunes (probably sometime on Sunday) - sorry it's not very outdoorsy but I'll bring an Atari Synthcart http://qotile.net/synth.html and hopefully a couple of Nintendo soundtrackers for retro-bleeping micromusic a-go-go...
    • Ben G: ooh yeah, I'm not a guru to workshop out on it but I'll try and bring my Synthcart/Atari (and find my LSDJ/Gameboy). If they're in tune there'll be enough to jam. I'll bung a Casio SK1 sampler in the boot too, and a bent Speak'n'Spell.
    • Dave G: wahey, top stuff Ben, I'll try and bring an Atari AV-out mod in case they don't have many RF-input TVs...
  • jag: Intro to Indian classical music with din (http://code.google.com/p/din). We will choose some late night ragas - there is 1 raga which will wake up the evil spirits if not rendered properly! Yes we will wake them up.

Presentations

2006: Presentations2006

Performances

  • I'd like to do a computational sound poetry performance (alex m)
  • I'd do 'Recordist Poetry' and have it work properly ... (live cut-up speech ) Also play small feedback,
  • It would be fun to jam with others again maybe in very slightly more organized fashion
  • I'd like to aid in spontaneous, improv performances. I do live video camera work (complete with intentional abuse of all cheesy in-camera effects) and could accompany some of the sound experiments, or just turn the camera on whenever the mood strikes us for people to jump in front of and play. Anyone have access to a video projector? (lena)
    • I'm planning on bringing a data projector with vga cable. it also has svideo and video inputs i think but you'd have to bring the lead (alex m)
  • I'd like to introduce you all to polite robot thereminist Clara 2.1 (essentially, Clara 2.0 - but with various improvements, for instance her arms don't fall off). And give the debut performance of my mouth music - that's music controlled in real-time by facial movements - this one's definitely better after a drink. Same goes for my robotic bells. I could do a little music performance/workshop if people are interested. (Sarah)
  • I have a "special FX unit" (more details later) which I would love the chance to combine with some of your other work (Iain)
  • I'd like to perform some Indian classical music ragas on din (http://code.google.com/p/din) until you pull the plug! (jag)

DorkBar

2006: DorkBar2006

I'm going to be playing barman. Now, like last time please do feel free to bring any left overs from your drinks cabinet. However we do intend on making some "proper" cocktails this time - at least B52's and Mojito's. For this we need some specific bottles. If you would like to, or club together to, bring any of the following that would be great. Let us know what you are bringing to avoid duplication.

Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters?

Right, I've been on to Webtenber.com and printted a list of cocktails it looks like we are going to be able to make with the indgredients we are likely to have. Most sound pretty awful, but I'm sure we can find a couple of good ones in there. Who knows, by the end of the weekend we may have invented a Dorkbot Drink ?

  • Kahlua
  • Bailey's
    • Annie (it's a bit "started-on")
  • Grand Marnier
  • Rum
    • Annie
  • Vodka
    • Annie
  • Orange Juice
    • RW
  • Lime Juice
  • Absinthe (1/2 bottle) (tallpaul/lena)
  • Elderflower Champagne (slightly alcoholic- great with vodka)- i have about 4l homemade left over which should still be drinkable if it doesn't explode in the car (Annie)
  • Homemade lavender syrup (tallpaul/lena)
  • Gin (+myabe vermouth) (tallpaul/lena)
  • Coca-cola
    • RW

I'll be bringing a limited supply of beer too (RW) , but please feel free to bring more to top up the stocks.

I will be bringing my ISI Gourmet Whipper which is used for making foams ( a la molecular gastronomy) and will be working on some recipes for foam cocktails. (Tall Paul)

  • Glasses.

Izzy has suggested a fire theme. If we are going to do flaming drinks we need proper glasses (flaming plastic tumblers ain't so fun!) . Has anybody got a largish number of shot glasses? - Somebody must have a "shot-glass chess set" they can lend for the weekend.

  • Annie - i have quite a lot of nutella-jar-glasses (1/2 pt)- they seem to be indestructible

Also, can anybody lay there hands on a large number of plastic glasses? (RW)

I will bring my Mr. Boston's guide to all cocktails (not really called that, but you get the idea...-Lena)
